Position Mission
Northwell Health is seeking a full-time academic Trauma Medical Director board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care to join the faculty at our Staten Island University Hospital. There is also an opportunity to be the Acute Care Surgery Director. This is an excellent opportunity to work as a Clinician Educator in a high acuity environment with a very supportive and experienced team. The qualified candidate will join and direct a team of three full-time trauma attendings in Staten Island University Hospital Division of Trauma.
The Director will also have responsibilities in the Surgical ICU and Acute Care Surgery services. Staten Island University Hospital is an ACS certified Level I Trauma Center with 3000 trauma evaluations, admitting over 50% annually. The Division also manages 5-10 beds in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Lastly, the Division is actively involved in research at the basic science, translational, and clinical level with active teaching responsibilities of residents and fellows. SIUH maintains an ACGME accredited general surgery residency, one of 3 in the Northwell Health System, as well as fellowships in Surgical Critical Care, Vascular and MIS.
As a leader, you will grow the Surgery portfolio through a combination of direct management of service-line operated programs, collaborative stewardship of non-service line-operated programs, and participation in system-level initiatives.
As an innovator, you will identify opportunities to improve patient satisfaction, quality of care, and delivery of direct patient care to ensure delivery of quality services. You will work with service-line leadership and our full-time trauma attending team to expand, develop, implement, and promote the best care for the patients we seek to serve.
As an educator, you will collaborate with medical school leadership on the design and implementation of educational curriculums and train the next generation of physicians at The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Staten Island University Hospital is a 714-bed teaching hospital that spans two campuses and provides a vast array of services in health and wellness. Our 17-acre North campus houses Staten Island’s most modern emergency department, a state-of-the-art education center and a medical arts pavilion. Our South campus boasts its own emergency department and offers a range of specialty programs, including geriatric psychiatry, behavioral health and substance abuse services.
The Department of Surgery at SIUH consists of 40 full-time and 6 part-time Physicians spanning the disciplines of general, vascular, breast, colorectal, bariatric, minimally invasive, hernia, and trauma, plastics, pediatrics, podiatry, urology, ENT, orthopedics, neurosurgery and ophthalmology. The Department maintains accreditation as an Adult Level I Trauma Center, Pediatric Level II Trauma Center, Surgical Residency Training Program (3 per year), Vascular Fellowship, Minimally Invasive Fellowship and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.
Nationally-Recognized Research Institute with State-of-the-Art Laboratories
The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research are composed of more than 1,500 clinicians, scientists and staff who work in laboratories and clinical research programs in collaboration with clinicians and patients throughout the many facilities of Northwell Health. Every year, more than 15,000 patients and volunteers participate in over 2,000 research studies. Our state-of-the-art laboratories provide the infrastructure needed to conduct groundbreaking, disease-oriented research. It also houses the largest genotyping facility in the state of New York. The Feinstein Institute ranks in the top 6th percentile of all National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants awarded to research centers. The Feinstein Institute has produced more than 200 patents in 80 distinct technologies and has generated a dozen successful biotech start-ups.

Candidate Qualifications
The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience:
Education and Experience
- MD or DO degree from an accredited College of Medicine
- Board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive clinical experience
- Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a physician in the State of New York
- Previous leadership experience preferred

Responsibilities and First-Year Aspirations
The newly appointed Trauma Medical Director will be expected to achieve the following goals in the first twelve months of his or her tenure:
- Earn the trust and confidence of the regional players and hospital leaders, administrators at each ambulatory location, physicians and staff throughout Northwell Health.
- Ensure high quality patient care through development and standardization of care processes and protocols, educational seminars, metrics, outcome measures and process improvement initiatives.
- Actively participate in physician recruitment and the development of growth opportunities.
- Develop interdisciplinary collaborations with the Feinstein Institute and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to expand and enhance research programs, with an emphasis on expanding access to clinical trials in year one.
- Participate in research projects (basic/clinical/applied), and advise fellows and house staff.
