NP/PA, Perianesthesia/Perioperative Team

ChristianaCare is looking for a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant to work in the Perianesthesia/Perioperative settin g, which will take responsibility for integrating and promoting evidence based practices for preoperative and postoperative patients. This is a full-time day position with variable hours.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assess health status of the surgical patient through complete physical examination and medical history.
• Assures that pre-surgical clinical and documentation requirements are met for patients to proceed with scheduled procedure.
• Acts as liaison for patients, families, and health professionals.
• Informs, counsels, and instructs patients and families on their specific health problems and test results.
• Utilizes teaching/learning principles coupled with an expert clinical knowledge to promote and provide education to the staff, patient, and patient's family.
• Provides formal and informal perioperative related in-services and educational programs as needed for staff.
• Provides preoperative and postoperative care to surgical patients including examination, reviewing and addressing lab, EKG and radiologic results.
• Manages care of the preoperative and post-operative patients within agreed upon protocols by physicians and nursing pre and post procedure.
• Consults with physicians regarding the patient's condition, diagnosis and treatment plan, medication orders and need for alternate dispositions if necessary.
• Initiates referrals to appropriate resources and services, promoting a collaborative approach to patient care.
• Prescribes medications/labs/tests as needed for the perioperative care of POETS patients, utilizing Powerchart as necessary.
• Performs chart reviews on POETS patients postoperatively as a quality improvement initiative.
• Perform point of care testing as necessary on preoperative patients.
• Utilizes, promotes, and initiates research in nursing practice.
• Utilizes effective verbal and written communication skills with patients and colleagues.
• Assists staff in the development of innovative and cost-effective patient programs of care.
• Promotes growth toward higher level of professionalism through role modeling and mentorship
• Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to surgical patients including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information, to identify patient needs and to provide care needed.
• Tracks patient outcomes and relevant data throughout the system using either automated or manual systems.
• Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives and provides direction.
• Participates in discharge planning and multi-disciplinary case discussions
• Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
• Maintains required credentials.
• Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from Master's level Advanced Practice Clinician program
Previous Outpatient/Perioperative clinical experience preferred
3-5 years of related clinical nursing experience preferred
