The Henry Ford Medical Group, as part of the Henry Ford Hospital and Health Network, will select a Division Head for Palliative Medicine. The Division Head will be charged with providing overall direction; goal setting and input to key strategic, clinical, and operational issues facing Palliative Medicine across the Henry Ford Health Network. The leader will provide vision, leadership, organization, and direction to the Division.
The Palliative Medicine service provides inpatient and outpatient care at Henry Ford Hospital. The system's flagship institution, Henry Ford Hospital (HFH), is an 877-bed tertiary care hospital, education and research complex in Detroit. Henry Ford Hospital has had an inpatient Palliative Medicine consult service for 16 years, ranking it as an early adopter and advocate for palliative medicine. The Palliative Medicine service provides care and support to a variety of complex care patients including: advanced heart failure and LVAD (left ventricular assist device), transplant (cardiac, lung, kidney, liver and pancreas), neurosurgical, and oncologic. The service also provides pivotal support in the ICU setting. Henry Ford Hospital is the largest ICU facility in MI and one of the largest in the nation with 156 ICU beds.
The Division has a well-established fellowship program that graduates two fellows annually. The team has regular multidisciplinary didactic sessions and has a strong history of academic production both regionally and nationally. The team is also responsible for educating residents and fellows in a variety of specialties in the principles of palliative medicine.
Recently, the Division of Palliative Medicine has been collaborating with Population Health Management initiatives. Opportunities exist to refine the integration of palliative medicine in the management of identified complex care patients through the Population Health care delivery model. Exciting growth opportunities also exist for the Division with the new Brigitte Harris Cancer Center expected to open early 2020. The cancer center will be located directly across from Henry Ford Hospital and will be a premier, destination ambulatory cancer care center providing precision medicine, clinical trials and research and enhanced support services for cancer patients. Palliative medicine will be integrated into care pathways for a variety of oncologic patients.

The Division Head will provide oversight for the Palliative Medicine Division within the Department of Internal Medicine for the Henry Ford Medical Group. S/he will work closely with the Palliative Medicine Service, Department of Internal Medicine Division Heads, Medical Director of Population Health Management, Community Care Services leaders, and other Chairs and leaders within the Henry Ford Medical Group and Henry Ford Health System to develop and implement best practices for inpatient and outpatient palliative care. The Division Head will be a practicing member of the Palliative Medicine Service.
Operations and strategy:
Palliative Medicine Service at Henry Ford Hospital
Provide direct patient care.
Responsible for ensuring direction and vision for the inpatient Consultation Service, outpatient clinic and supportive oncology services at the Brigitte Harris Cancer Center.
Achieve a higher penetration rate of inpatient consults by providing outstanding service to patients and referring physicians and by developing triggers for earlier referral.
Guide palliative medicine service operations plan and adjust as needed
Collaborate with the team to determine the most effective structure for interdisciplinary team meetings.
Responsible for ensuring collaboration with integrative medicine.
Ensure effective interdisciplinary support including adequate support from social work and chaplaincy.
Pilot efforts to incorporate telehealth in the outpatient setting.
Strategic Program Development and Planning
Contribute as subject matter expert to motivate, champion, and implement palliative medicine across the Henry Ford Health System.
Lead efforts to improve integration of palliative medicine (inpatient, clinic, home-based) and hospice at Henry Ford Hospital and across Henry Ford Health System.
Work with Cancer Center leaders to incorporate palliative medicine services into appropriately designed care pathways.
Set quality standards and expected credentials for palliative medicine physicians and advanced practice providers across the health system
Promote marketing for palliative medicine inpatient and outpatient services
Support and collaborate with home palliative care services and Population Health Management to improve the continuum of palliative medicine.
Promote multi-disciplinary care and planning across the relevant subspecialties.
Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of budgets which attain Division, Department, and System goals.
Directly support the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Director to further advance the academic and educational mission of the Division.
Responsible for ensuring the development of competencies and a curriculum for training new APPs in palliative medicine.
Responsible for ensuring management of rotations for off-service residents/fellows (IM residents, Acute Pain Service, oncology, and nephrology fellows.
Identify system education needs for primary palliative medicine educations across all disciplines and collaborate with appropriate leaders (e.g. nurse managers, program directors, physician leadership, case management leadership) to develop educational programs to meet needs.
Encourage, develop, and participate in research activities within the Division, Department and Health Network.
Team Development and Management
Foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork, with a dedication to patient care and quality outcomes.
Establish the faculty development plan including identification of specific sub-specialty capabilities as may be required for program development.
Participate in recruitment efforts for ongoing staffing needs.
Proactively work on all aspects of faculty and staff retention.
Determine appropriate evaluation to ensure competency for APPs and other palliative medicine interdisciplinary staff (e.g. social work).
Conduct regularly scheduled evaluations that provide constructive feedback for all team members.
Lead team resilience and wellness programs.
Coordinate team educational activities that are outside of the scope of fellowship didactics.
Clinical Performance/Quality Improvement
Lead efforts to create and monitor appropriate palliative medicine dashboard.
Lead quality initiatives, including the measurement and monitoring of key metrics, and the development of standardized protocols and policies.
Develop, monitor and assess key performance metrics of the physicians, mid-level providers and of the group.
Accept accountability for contributing continuously to improving Divisional, Service Line, and System performance.
An M.D. or D.O. degree, Board Certified in Palliative Medicine, and an unrestricted state medical license.
Minimum of four years of clinical experience in palliative medicine required with prior experience in a leadership role within an academic institution preferred.
